Why study the Bible?
Long ago, God spoke and all of creation came into being. By the power of his spoken word, life was created. There is power in the word of God, both the spoken and the written word. For in the written word of God resides the power for creation of new life in Christ, and we can be touched by that power each time we open this book. Make time each day to access the power of God found in God’s word. Read God’s word daily and discover new life
What is Disciple?
Disciple Bible Study is an exciting and dynamic approach to Bible Study created by The United Methodist Church. Participants will read assigned portions of scripture on a daily basis utilizing one theme each week to organize the study and reflection for that week. Once a week, participants will meet with the group (usually 10-14 per group) and discuss the weekly material. This allows for growth and fellowship in a small group setting. Participants will be strengthened in their faith and in the process become disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Duluth First United Methodist Church believes that Disciple is a part of the process of revitalizing the Church through increased biblical literacy and through intentional deepening of our spiritual journey.
Who can participate?
Disciple is a non-denominational Bible study. All are welcomed and it is open to the community. Classes are offered each Fall and registration begins early summer.
How do I register for these courses?
Disciple will begin the week after Labor Day in order to give you time to get your children started in their activities, or to give you time to decide which class you would like to commit to for this year. We hope to offer a number of classes on Sunday evening and Wednesday evening. Please sign up by calling the church office or picking up a form on Sunday from the Gathering Room and outside the Grand Hall. For additional information please contact Rev. C. Kay Fuino by e-mail at ckfuino@duluthumc.org, or at 770-476-3776, ext. 17. The classes available will depend on the number of people who register.
DISCIPLE I: BECOMING DISCIPLES THROUGH BIBLE STUDY
DESCRIPTION: BECOMING DISCIPLES THROUGH BIBLE STUDY gives equal time to both the Old and New Testament, emphasizing the wholeness of the Bible as the revelation of God. DISCIPLE aims at transformation, not just information, and calls on persons to submit themselves to examination by Scripture, to put themselves under the power of God’s Word, and to be changed by God’s Word. DISCIPLE invites persons to bring their experiences and struggles to the Scripture

DISCIPLE III: REMEMBER WHO YOU ARE
DESCRIPTION: REMEMBER WHO YOU ARE is prepared for those who have completed BECOMING DISCIPLES THROUGH BIBLE STUDY. Resident in the title is the driving idea in this study--the connection between memory and identity as the people of God. The word You in the title is meant to be heard both in its singular form (the individual) and in its plural form (the community). We are a community of memory.

DISCIPLE IV: UNDER THE TREE OF LIFE
DESCRIPTION: UNDER THE TREE OF LIFE concentrates on the writings in the Old Testament – Ruth, 1 and 2 Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah, Esther, Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Solomon, Lamentations, and Daniel. New Testament Scriptures include the Gospel of John; 1, 2, and 3 John; James; Jude; and Revelation.
Emphasis on the Psalms as Israel’s hymnbook and prayer book leads naturally to an emphasis on worship in the study. Present though the entire study is the sense of living toward completion, toward the climax of the message and the promise, extravagantly pictured in the Revelation.
